All about concrete floors

The concrete floors are very resistant, they are very easy to maintain, you have different types to choose from, the industrial style offers all the décor of your home or premises and gives a greater feeling of spaciousness.

What is concrete?

It is a compound of sand, granules and mortar, better known as concrete. Any type of pigment can be added to this concrete mixture to give color to the floor. It is also a mortar compound that adheres to wood, marble, concrete, tiles … just make sure it is free from cracks, holes or joints so that the other materials can adhere perfectly.

Advantages of concrete floors

The concrete floor is very solid, strong, non-combustible, highly resistant to heat and humidity, and it could even be said that it is indestructible.

In addition, it is ideal for underfloor heating installation.

We will show you the different thermal conductivity coefficients of the most used material flooring:

  • Carpet: 0.04 kcal / m * h * K
  • Linoleum: 0.05 kcal / m * h * K
  • PVC: 0.12 kcal / m2 * h * K
  • Natural and synthetic parquet: 0.16 kcal / m * h * K
  • Ceramic: 1.04 kcal / m * h * K
  • Mortar or concrete floor: 1.20 kcal / m * h * K
  • Marble: 2.20 kcal / m2 * h * K

We see that marble is the one with the greatest thermal conductivity and is the most suitable to be laid with underfloor heating, followed by mortar or concrete floors. Carpet would be the least suitable for this type of heating due to its low thermal conductivity.

Types of decorative concrete

  1. The floors , which are decorative tiles , are very resistant and do not deteriorate over time.
  2. The concrete casting , a layer of concrete hardened at a regular rate. Here you can make patterns such as sweeping, printing, marking, paving. You can also put reliefs of marble, glass, quartz, etc. As you can see, there are more options and decorations.

Different existing finishes of concrete floors

Generally, when the floor is already dry, it is polished or sanded and in this way the granules are Germanized and gives the floor a crystallized appearance. But you can also choose other finishes: non-slip, stain-resistant, waterproof, matte, satin, foamed, glossy, etc.

These techniques are used for finishes:

  • Painted concrete: covered with a special paint after drying.
  • Waxed concrete: smoothing of a colored mineral mortar. After drying, the surface is waxed with resin, which polishes and waterproofs the floor.
  • Pressed concrete: the smoother the floor, the more polished it will be. It can be done manually or with a machine called a helicopter.

How to keep the concrete floor looking like new for a long time?

They are very easy to maintain and only need soap and water for cleaning. To remove ink, oil or rust stains use a brush with water and baking soda; or put on some talcum powder and wait for it to absorb the fat. Never use ammonia or soda. It is also advisable to waterproof and wax the floor regularly if it has not been treated against porosity
